Changing the Stigma Around Trades: Hallway Plumbing’s Apprenticeship Program

In a time when student debt is at an all-time high and the skilled labor shortage continues to grow, we’re doing something bold to change the conversation. This August, we’re taking our apprenticeship program to the next level by expanding its reach, strengthening its curriculum, and partnering with a powerful network of industry leaders.

A Debt-Free Path to a Six-Figure Career

The Hallway Apprenticeship Program is a three-year, paid training track that prepares individuals to become licensed journeyman and master plumbers. Apprentices are employed full-time while learning on the job, attending structured classes, and receiving personalized mentorship from experienced professionals. The result is a well-rounded, highly qualified plumbing professional without the burden of student loans.

Graduates of the program are equipped to thrive in a growing field with the potential to earn six-figure salaries, enjoy job security, and build long-term careers all without ever stepping foot into traditional college debt. The pathway is clear, the opportunity is real, and the support system is already in place.

Changing Perceptions About Plumbing

One of our driving goals is to break the outdated stereotypes around the trades. Plumbing is not a fallback career. It is a high-demand, high-skill profession that requires critical thinking, mechanical expertise, and real-world problem solving. For too long, careers like plumbing have been viewed as second-tier options compared to four-year degrees. We’re on a mission to change that.

Today’s apprentices are tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, managers, and industry leaders. By showing that trades offer serious earning potential, clear advancement, and personal fulfillment, we aim to reframe plumbing as not just a job, but a professional, respected career.

Confronting the National Shortage

The plumbing industry is facing a serious workforce crisis. According to one analysis, the U.S. could be short roughly 550,000 plumbers by 2027, costing the economy billions each year. Plumber job openings are projected to average 42,600 annually over the next decade, driven mostly by retirements and shifting career paths.

The replacement rate in plumbing is falling short, with some reports showing that for every five professionals who retire, only one or two are entering the trade to take theirplace (Plumbing & Mechanical Magazine 2025 Outlook and Yahoo Finance interview with Mike Rowe).

Apprenticeships have a clear role in addressing this gap, but only if we attract more people into plumbing as a first-choice career.

A Program Built on Experience and Structure

What sets our program apart isn’t just the philosophy behind it, but the execution. Apprentices go through an intentionally crafted journey that combines hands-on fieldwork with classroom learning. The curriculum covers everything from basic plumbing systems and code requirements to advanced troubleshooting and leadership training.

Experienced team members mentor participants, guiding them from their first fittings to complex installations. This kind of direct, in-the-field learning is where real mastery takes shape. We believe it’s the most effective way to train future professionals.

And we’re not building this alone. Our team includes instructors, supervisors, and foremen who care about passing the torch. Their mentorship is what transforms this program from a job opportunity into a life-changing career path.

47 Sponsors Driving It Forward
One of the most exciting pieces of this program’s evolution is the incredible level of industry support behind it. We’ve partnered with 47 sponsors so far, with more joining along the way, across the plumbing world including manufacturers, toolmakers, rep agencies, and suppliers.

These partners are doing more than lending their names. They’re investing in apprentices by providing real tools, real products, and real-world exposure. From fully stocked toolboxes to product-specific training and job site introductions, sponsors are helping to set these apprentices up for long-term success.

This also means apprentices get hands-on experience with the exact tools and systems they’ll be working with throughout their careers. It’s a win for everyone. Apprentices get confident and capable with high-quality products. Sponsors get their tools into the hands of future decision-makers. And the industry strengthens from the bottom up.

Launching with Purpose

To celebrate this growth and commitment, we are kicking things off with an Apprentice Sponsorship event on August 15 at our Hallway Plumbing warehouse. This event will bring together apprentices, mentors, company leaders, and our sponsors under one roof.

The day will feature apprentice competitions, vendor and sponsor booths, program speakers, and a chance for our new apprentices to meet the very people who are equipping them for the future. It’s part celebration and part introduction to the new standard we’re setting for what a plumbing apprenticeship can be.

It’s also a public statement. We are proud of this program, the people in it, and the future it represents. We want the entire community to see what’s possible when we invest in people the right way.

A Model for the Industry

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to the skilled trades shortage, but this program is proof that focused effort, collaboration, and commitment can move the needle. We believe apprenticeships should be viewed not as a backup option, but as a primary pathway to success.

We’re building a model that can scale, inspire, and make a difference. Whether someone is just starting out, switching careers, or trying to find a way forward, the Hallway Apprenticeship Program offers a chance to build something real. Something lasting.

We’re not just filling jobs. We’re building futures. And we’re just getting started.
